All that you need for this is the 24 hour Innsbruck Card and a spirit of exploration
MORNING:
Start the day with a walk from the town centre along the bank of the Inn River to the Panorama Painting (Riesenrundgemälde). As you pass by the Innbrücke bridge, the Congress Centre and Löwenhaus, you will enjoy impressive views of your first destination of the day, Nordpark-Seegrube and the Hafelekar peak. Before taking the Hungerberg Funicular, it is worth paying a quick visit to the Panorama Painting, which depicts the Tyrolean people’s battle for freedom in 1809 over an area of 1000 sq meters.
After a short break on the Hungerburg plateau (850 m above sea level), board the Nordkettenbahn cable car which takes you in minutes up to Seegrube, 1,905 m above sea level. The view from here over Innsbruck, the mountain landscape surrounding the town and beyond to the three thousand meter peaks in the central Alps is breath taking. If this is not enough for you, there is the option to carry on to the 2,334 m Hafelekar terminal, which will provide you with an even better view.
LUNCHTIME:
Enjoy a well-earned lunch on Seegrube itself or return to the Hungerburg plateau where there is a variety of places to eat.
AFTERNOON:
After lunch is a good time for a little walk. You can either walk along a lovely wooded path or take the Hungerburg Funicular direct to the Alpine Zoo, the highest zoo in Europe. The zoo is home to more than 2,000 animals indigenous to the Alps, comprising 150 different species from bear to wild goat.
If walking around the zoo has made you somewhat tired, you can take our new shuttle bus, the "SIGHTSEER", back to the town centre. On the way you can listen to information about the town’s sights over headphones in your native language.
It will be late afternoon by the time you reach the centre of town, just right for refreshments in one of the many cafés before exploring Innsbruck’s gothic Old Town with its landmark, the Golden Roof. As well as a host of sightseeing attractions, the centre provides wonderful shopping facilities, both in the Old Town and the Maria-Theresien-Strasse district, where it is particularly worth strolling round the new Rathausgalerien shopping centre.
EVENING:
After a long and eventful day, you will have definitely earnt a short rest. But there is too much to see in Innsbruck not to make the most of the evening as well. Alongside numerous restaurants of varying styles, from traditional Tyrolean to Italian and Asian cuisine, you can also choose from a wide range of evening activities. The regional theatre (Landestheater) hosts a high quality programme of musical and theatrical events the whole year round, and several international festivals also take place over the course of the year. Maybe you prefer traditional folk music or brass bands? If all that is not enough, you can always round off an eventful day by trying your luck at the Innsbruck Casino....
