Then and now

Ötztal valley – holiday guests for more than 150 years

Since the first guests arrived at the beginning of the 19th century, until today, there have been a lot of changes in Hochgurgl Obergurgl. One thing has stayed the same: the beauty of the natural environment on 2,000 metres above sea level and the enthusiasm for snow.

Today Hochgurgl Obergurgl is one of the most popular ski regions with 23 lift facilities and 110 kilometres of pistes.
In 1840 it was mainly explorers and painters, who came to the remote Ötztal valley. This shows that even almost 200 years ago, people already appreciated the beauty of the far-off Ötztal valley. In Europe’s highest located church valley there were, already before the First World War, 14 farms, which evolved into today’s Hochgurgl, Obergurgl – abbreviated “Gurgl”.

Tourism and Hochgurgl’s origin

Since 1939 tourists came to visit Gurgl in summer and winter. The first guesthouses and accommodations were built and the former mountain-farm valley became Obergurgl and Untergurgl. In the 50s the high-alpine Hochalpenstraße Timmelsjoch was built, Austria’s highest located checkpoint, this street laid the foundation for tourism in Hochgurgl, a hotel valley on the mountains.
The Laurin Hotel was one of the first hotels to open in the 60s.

Hochgurgl Obergurgl today

Today Hochgurgl Obergurgl is one of the most popular ski regions with 23 lift facilities and 110 kilometres of pistes. Apart from the ski area on the glaciers, Gurgl is the first region to kick-off the ski season every year. In the summer the area provides a warm and dry climate, which is hardly seen anywhere else within the Alps – a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers.
